Shawn Patrick Rowe, November 11, 1972-July 25, 2026
Born in Pikeville, Kentucky, on November 14, 1972, Shawn Patrick Rowe spent his life in the mountains he loved and called Ashcamp, Kentucky, home.
Anyone who knew Shawn knew life around him was never boring. Whether you knew him as Shawn Pat, Shrowe, or Quick, you knew someone with a mischievous grin, a quick wit, and an endless supply of practical jokes.
Shawn was the kind of man people naturally gravitated toward. He was good to everyone, never met a stranger for long, and built friendships that lasted a lifetime. His generous heart was evident throughout his life, including the selfless decision to donate one of his kidneys to his mother.
A gifted athlete, Shawn made Kentucky football history as an Elkhorn City Cougar by setting the state record for the most rushing yards in 1990 among many other awards. His competitive spirit stayed with him long after high school as he continued playing men's softball until amyloidosis finally forced him to retire his cleats.
He loved football, Kentucky Wildcats basketball, the beach, a cold Red Bull, and making people laugh.
His family often joked about "Rowe magic"—Shawn's name for the unbelievable bad luck that somehow always seemed to find him. His spleen ruptured unexpectedly. He received the wrong blood. His heart stopped, and he was gone for six minutes before fighting his way back. Then, after being diagnosed with amyloidosis in 2017 and being told he had only months to live, he proved everyone wrong by living another nine years.
Even during countless hospital stays, Shawn never lost his sense of humor. The nurses on 8E learned that firsthand after he surprised them with a rubber snake. To Shawn, even a hospital room was a place to play a joke.
One of Shawn's greatest joys was finding his way back to his high school sweetheart, Cindy. After nearly twenty years apart, life reunited them. They married and spent the years that followed proving that sometimes the best love stories simply need time.
Shawn was preceded in death by his brother, Chris Rowe.
He is survived by his parents, James Earl and Diana Rowe; his devoted wife, Cindy; his brother, J. Rowe; his children, Jordan, Jazzi Rosie, and Austin; his stepchildren, Layne and Gage; his favorite title of all, "Uncle Daddy" to Connor; his special niece, Lauren; several grandkids and a host of other family members.
If you visited Shawn's house, you also learned one important rule: the toys were Papaw's. The same went for his prized stuffed monkey collection. His toys and monkeys were to be admired from a respectful distance.
Shawn's legacy won't be measured by football records or the battles he fought. It will be found in the laughter he shared, the friendships he built, and the love he gave so freely to his family.
If you'd like to honor Shawn, do it his way. Pull a harmless prank. Grab a Red Bull. Spend a day at the beach. Throw a football. Cheer for the Wildcats. Hug your family. Laugh often. And always be good to people.
We imagine Heaven got a little livelier the day Shawn arrived. Chris was surely waiting with a smile, while Shawn walked through the gates carrying a football, hiding a rubber snake, and reminding everyone to stay out of his stuffed monkeys.
Until we meet again...
Whenever life throws you one of those impossible-to-explain moments, just smile, shake your head, and say,
"That's just a little Rowe magic."
Go Big Blue.
